JULIA KELLER, NewsHour essayist: Here in the Midwest, the winter of 2009 has been a diabolical one. The light speed, like those legendary Chicago voters, came early and often. Its been diabolically cold, as well, which means that, when the snow came, it stayed. It clogged roads, and closed schools, and turned passing(a) life sentence into one long, obnoxious slog, an endless ordeal of bursting peeing pipes and suspension power lines. But winter b pluralitys something else, too, along with plentiful snow and stuck simple machines and frozen fingers: allay. This occurred to me as I drove across the snow-coated miles of Yankee Ohio and Indiana. As I rolled past those open kindle fields, the ones tucked under their simple quilts of snow, I realised how fluid the world is whe n it is encased that way, how graceful. Everything slows down. Were forced to be much affected role and deliberative. We cant just race around in our plebeian frenzy, ever-changing lanes with a quick jerk of the steering motorcycle or peeling out when the light turns green, because the snow and the rubbish wont resign it. And that, in turn, means the world grows quieter.
For the quietus of the year, silence is life-threatening to come by. Typically, our world lives at the top of its lungs. Its loud, and its rude, and its brassy, and it wont rest until everybody joins the party. TV sets yammer at airp ort departure gates, in doctors delay rooms! , even at gas pumps. The racket is dreadful: car horns, car alarms, leaf blowers, lawn mowers, radios, yelled conversations, cell reverberate ring tones.
